About
With over 18 years of experience in clinical psychology, Dr Peter Abraham offers compassionate care and evidence-based treatments to individuals of all ages, including late adolescents, adults, and families.
Peter started his career as a teacher, Student Welfare Coordinator and then Principal at Kensington Community High School. This school specialises in the education and development needs of students identified as being at risk of not completing secondary education due to significant personal and interpersonal difficulties, family dislocation, homelessness, personal trauma and learning difficulties. He was instrumental in supporting both students and teachers with their mental wellbeing.
After realising that he wanted to do more for his community, Peter trained as a Clinical Psychologist. He completed a Doctor of Psychology (Clinical Psychology) in 2012 at Victoria University, and was invited to deliver the Valedictorian Address at the Victoria University Graduation Ceremony (pictured below).
Peter’s Doctoral research was about how the Western approach to medicine interfaces with different cultures and beliefs. He proposed an improved and dynamic model for culturally oriented healthcare practice that is more inclusive of Australia’s multicultural population.
Peter is regularly asked to speak at a number of events relating to the mental health of youth and adults. This has included schools, council, sporting clubs and parent forums. He has presented papers at a number of conferences including the Australian Psychological Society and Australian Diabetes Society.
He was recently asked to share his story of strength, mental fortitude and self-belief in an interview on the Aware podcast.
